Humphrey Bogart Season

A rare opportunity to see three of Bogart’s classic movies as they were intended to be viewed – on the cinema screen.

Sunday 5th February 5pm                                    THE MALTESE FALCON

In 1941, this was Bogart’s first great picture, even though he had been making films regularly for five years previously.

When Miss Wanderly walks into Sam Spade’s office he soon finds himself in the middle of double-crossing intrigue and several murders, perpetrated by strange characters bent on obtaining possession of the famed bejeweled Maltese Falcon.

Starring: Humphrey Bogart, Mary Astor, Gladys George, Peter Lorre

Sunday 19th February 5pm                                  THE BIG SLEEP

Made in 1946, The Big Sleep, based on the Raymond Chandler novel, was the second of four films starring both Bogart and Lauren Bacall.

Private-eye Philip Marlowe is hired to keep an eye on General Sternwood's youngest daughter, Carmen, who has fallen into bad company and is likely to do some damage to herself and her family before long. He soon finds himself falling in love with her older sister, Vivien, who initially takes a deep dislike to Mr Marlowe. However, the plot thickens when murder follows murder...

Starring: Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, John Ridgely, Martha Vickers

Sunday 4th March 5pm                                          THE AFRICAN QUEEN

Bogart won his only Oscar for The African Queen, made in 1951 by his friend John Huston.

In Africa during WW1 missionary Rose Sayer is forced to leave her post by the only available transport, the crummy river steamboat 'African Queen' of grumpy boorish compatriot Charlie Allnut. She is determined to do her bit for the British war effort and persuades Charlie to go along with the plan.
